IRS Ends Exemptions for 28 Gilroy Nonprofits
Of the 28 that failed to file annual tax forms, many could already be out of business.
The Internal Revenue Service has ended the tax-exempt status of 275,000 nonprofits, including 28 in Gilroy, after those organizations failed to file annual tax forms.
The New York Times is reporting that a change in the tax rules for nonprofits in 2006 required that all organizations file a return. Previously, only organizations with more than $25,000 in annual revenue were required to file.
The action reduces the number of charities, trade organizations and other nonprofit groups in the country by “roughly 17 percent,” though IRS officials said many of the organizations involved may already gone out of business without notice.

The New York Times wrote:
Lois Lerner, director of the division of the Internal Revenue Service that oversees tax-exempt groups, said the agency believed most of the organizations on the list were defunct, though there was really no way to know, because so many of them simply could not be reached.
