May 18 Declared Robert Guerrero Day in Gilroy

The boxer's hometown will welcome him with open arms on May 18.

He may have lost to Floyd Weather (arguably the world's best boxer) over the weekend, but Robert "Ghost" Guerrero is still beloved in Gilroy.

At Monday's meeting of the Gilroy City Council, May 18 will be officially declared Robert Guerrero Day in Gilroy to welcome the boxer back home.

Santana is set to perform at the event, which will also feature a speech from Mayor Don Gage.

"Gilroy is what I know, it's where I'm from," Guerrero told the Mercury News.

On Saturday, the Ghost lost in 12 rounds to Mayweather by a final count of 117-111. Guerrero's career record is now a still stellar 31-2-1, while Mayweather improved to an unreal 44-0 with 26 knockouts.

Guerrero recently made headlines for an arrest at JFK Airport in New York, when he attempted to clear security with a gun that was not properly registered for his travel. He will appear in court on that charge later this year.

But usually his name is only associated with positive endeavors, like helping his wife beat leukemia.

Despite his fame, Guerrero still lives in a in a house built in the 1940s in Downtown Gilroy, according to the Mercury News.
