Should Gilroy Spend $100K to Find Stolen Cars?

The city council will vote tonight on whether or not to buy a camera system that helps police catch criminals.

The Gilroy City Council could lend a major helping hand to the police department at Monday's meeting if it decides to approve a $99,070 purchase.

City staff is recommending that the council approve the expense, which would buy camera systems that are placed on police cars, which read license plates, scanning for stolen vehicles and dangerous suspects.

The Gilroy Police Department currently has three of these systems, but police are arguing they need more because an officer is no longer on duty in the Regional Auto Theft Task Force due to staffing issues.
