Gavilan Announces New Head Football Coach

Spencer Gilford heads to Gavilan after two years at Los Medanos College in Pittsburg.

There's still football news in the wake of Sunday's Super Bowl, but forget the Packers and Steelers: It's time for the Gavilan Rams.

It was day one for 's new football coach, Spencer Gilford, today. After two years as the defensive coordinator at Los Medanos College, he had some words for his new team, said college spokeswoman Jan Bernstein-Chargin.

"I let them know what expectations I have for them, that we're here to get better on a daily basis" Gilford said in a press release, "We're here for them—not just athletically —but personally and academically. We're a medium for them to matriculate to a four-year school and be successful."

"He's a winner," Ron Hannon, Gavilan director of athletics, said in the release.

Gilford's academic history includes a decade teaching math and science to at-risk high school students and an array of athletics courses at Los Medanos. He worked with Stanford Athletics and helped the Los Medanos Mustangs to improve their state ranking by 20 places, according to the release.
