A National Food Day at the Gilroy Farmer's Market, and a natural sciences day at Gilroy Gardens are just a couple of events taking place this weekend.

National Food Day at the Gilroy Farmer's Market

When/Where: Next to the Gilroy Center for the Arts, near 7341 Monterey St.

Why go: Next Monday, Oct. 24 is National Food Day, but the farmer's market is celebrating a day early by incorporating the event into Sunday's farmer's market. The national event focuses on healthy, affordable food that's produced in a humane, and environmentally-sound way. Not only are local health-care officials expected to stop by, but the market will be full of fresh, local produce that's always grown via safe and healthy methods.

Organic Saturdays at the Gilroy Demonstration Garden

When/Where: Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., near the Center for the Arts, located at 7341 Monterey St.

Why go: You didn't think that fresh, local produce was only available during the Sunday farmer's market, did you? There's another opportunity to observe and harvest fresh produce right out of Gilroy's own demonstration garden. There are open work days every Saturday, allowing attendees to pick fresh produce and learn about the growing process. The event is followed by a potluck lunch at the garden.

Natural Sciences Days at Gilroy Gardens

When/Where: October 21st and 28th, at the amusement park, located at 3050 Hecker Pass Hwy.

Why Go: Students will have the chance to experience a full day of learning in multiple disciplines of science. Students participate in different educational activities throughout the day, and will even have a chance to experience some of the rides and attractions as part of the educational process.

Greater Tuna at the Limelight Actors Theater

When/Where: Limelight Actors Theater in downtown Gilroy, on Oct. 21-23. Two matinee showings on Saturday and Sunday starting at 2 p.m., with evening showings beginning at 8 p.m.

Why Go: The comedy Greater Tuna will be taking place in downtown Gilroy's Limelight Actors theater. The two-man act takes place in the fictional town of Tuna, Texas, and is sure to include plenty of southern humor. The play will make you laugh so hard it hurts. Plus the production benefits the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's disease, so it's a win-win situation.

When/Where: At the West Valley College campus, located at 14000 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga. Saturday at 1 p.m.

Why Go: The Gavilan Rams are coming back from a 41-0 loss. They need the encouragement, and could likely have their victorious moment against West Valley this Saturday.
