Muhammad Ali's Coach Dies in Gilroy

Julius Menendez was 90 years old and had a prolific sports coaching career.

Santa Clara County lost one of its great historic figures earlier this month with the passing of Julius Menendez.

Menendez coached Muhammad Ali in the 1960 Olympics when Ali still went by Cassius Clay.

According to CBS, Menendez died in Gilroy on April 14. He was 90 years old, and would have turned 91 two days later.

The coach had a mind for more than just boxing though. He also coached the 1972 and 1976 USA men's Olympic teams and won 295 games as the coach at San Jose State over a 36-year span.

In all, the boxers Menendez coached won three Olympic gold medals, SoccerAmerica.com reported.
