PREPS NOTEBOOK: Gilroy Girls Hoops Team Finishes Off Perfect Season

Several Gilroy High teams prepare for next week's CCS playoffs.

PERFECTION--The Gilroy High girls basketball team ripped off a pair of lopsided victories to close out a perfect 12-0 season in Tri County Athletic League play this week.

Now 21-1 overall, the Mustangs will take an 18-game winning into the Central Coast Section Playoffs which begin next week. Gilroy is expected to draw a top seed in the Division I bracket.

Seven seniors were honored before Tuesday night’s 52-23 victory over Alisal during senior night at Gilroy High. Alex Rose, Ashley Lambert, Dani Hemeon, Francesca Filice, Lauren Rhodes, Emily Costa and Chelsea Hill all were recognized before the ball game.

 LEAGUE CHAMPS—The Gilroy boys soccer team blanked back-to-back opponents en route its first league title in five years this week. The TCAL champions finished the year with an 11-1 mark in league play and a 15-3-2 record overall. The Mustangs defeated North Salinas 3-0 and Salinas High 4-0. The victories helped hold off defending champ Alisal High-Salinas.

Luis Galvan, Abraham Arreaga and Jonathan Diaz de Leon each scored goals in the shutout win over Salinas. Diaz de Leon finished the year with a team-high 18 goals.

 COLLEGE BOUND—Three Gilroy High field hockey players announced their letter of intent to extend their field hockey careers to the collegiate level this week. Dani Hemeon (The University of Iowa), Emily Costa (UC-Davis) and Aubrey Young (St. Louis University) all played on the 2010 CCS Field Hockey Championship runner-up squad this year. Hemeon and Costa are also members of the league champion girls basketball team.
