Robert Guerrero Injured—Maidana Showdown Canceled

Organizers canceled the match after the four-time titlist boxer and Gilroy native suffered a shoulder injury during training.

Nearly a week before entering the biggest fight of his career, Gilroy native, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, has pulled out of his Aug. 27 showdown with Marcos Maidana, which was scheduled to take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. He cited a shoulder injury that has canceled the entire scheduled boxing card.

The 28-year-old injured his left shoulder during a sparring session in Big Bear, where Guerrero’s training camp was taking place. Guerrero is reportedly making his way up to the San Jose area where he’ll receive an MRI and be evaluated by a San Francisco 49ers orthopedic surgeon, publicist Bill Caplan said.

“It’s very disappointing,” said Caplan, publicist with Golden Boy Promotions, Guerrero’s promoter. “He apparently injured his shoulder yesterday; they were hoping it would be better this morning. They iced it down. It wasn’t better … it was worse.”

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, became aware of Guerrero’s injury just an hour before a 10 a.m. scheduled international media conference call.

Discussions of finding a replacement for Saturday’s main event were considered, according to Caplan, but Schaefer opted that “there wasn’t’ enough time to get a suitable opponent to put in his place.”

“Golden Boy is very disappointed, because we knew it was going to be a great show,” Caplan added. “HBO is disappointed,å because they have to postpone that date … and I’m sure all the fans are as well. Unfortunately, this is what happens in an individual sport.”

Guerrero, a titlist in three different weight classes, was vying to win his fourth in as many divisions with Maidana’s 140-pound WBA Interim trinket on the line.
