SOFTBALL: Christopher Tops Watsonville

Cougars tame Wildcatz in MBL matchup; improve to 4-1 in league play.

Christopher 7, Watsonville 1

The Star: Sophomore outfielder Mariza Rodriguez put on a hitting clinic on Thursday that earned her top honors.  Rodriguez went 3-for-3 from the plate with three RBI’s and one walk during the impressive Cougars home triumph.

The Turning Point: The scoring started in the bottom of the third inning for Christopher (9-2-1, 4-1-0 MBL) as sophomore Kaslin Ettema scored on a pass ball. Now with a one-run lead, junior Olivia Bajaras belted a triple that scored sophomore Arianna Vasquez.  The Cougars added another run later in the inning and led 3-0 after three. The Cougars never looked back the rest of the way.

The Quote:  Christopher coach Larry Nabzeska was very proud of this win.

“This team is very young as we only have a few juniors and some sophomores and one freshman, but they are a well rounded team and they hit the ball really well,” Nabzeska said.  “I was really pleased to see Olivia Bajaras hit that triple, that was the best she has hit the ball this season.”

The Cougars’ Mariza Rodriguez credits her new approach at the plate as the main reason for her .349 batting average this season.

“The girls on my team always want me to hit for the fence because I can, but when I go up to the plate I’m thinking just get a base hit and the others will come,” Christopher’s sophomore outfielder Rodriguez said.

What's Next? Christopher (9-3-1; 4-2-0 MBL) will go on the road and face Del Mar (2-11-0; 1-6, Santa Teresa) in San Jose.  Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12th.

Bottom Line: In only year two of the softball program at Christopher, the young bunch is already right in thick of the Monterey Bay League title chase. The promising Cougars bunch has already nabbed up four wins in league heading into the meat of the MBL schedule.
