SOFTBALL: Gold Glove Work Preserves Road Win for Christopher

Cougars third baseman Mariza Rodriquez turns unassisted double-play in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win for the Cougars.

Christopher 4, Milpitas 3

The Turning Point: Milpitas was down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third and nobody out. Then Marie Mozqueda hit a screaming line drive down the third base line that shot straight into the glove of Christopher third bagger Mariza Rodriquez. Rodriquez then turned and dove on third base to complete the unassisted double-play and take the life out of the Milpitas rally all by herself. The next batter grounded back to closer Kayla Medrano, who threw her out at first and secured the 4-3 road win.

The Quote: “I knew when I caught it I had a chance for the double-play. It all happened really fast.” – Christopher third baseman Mariza Rodriquez said about her unassisted double-play in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Third baseman Mariza Rodriquez, who turned an unassisted double-play in the seventh inning to all but end the Milpitas rally and preserve the one-run victory on the road.

Christopher’s Kayla Medrando, who singled in Arianna Vasquez in the bottom of the seventh to put the Cougars up 4-3. They would eventually go on to win by that score.

Bottom Line: It took a total team effort and a little bit of luck for Christopher to tally the win on the road against Milpitas on Tuesday night. Starting Pitcher Aly Olvera worked in and out of trouble through five innings while only giving up one run. But Milpitas finally got to her in the sixth inning and tied the game.

The Milpitas rally awoke a Cougar lineup that had been shut out since the second inning. With one out in the top of the seventh, Arianna Vasquez tripled over the head of the Milpitas left fielder and was singled home by the very next batter Kayla Medrano. Medrano then closed the door in the seventh inning, largely thanks to an unassisted double-play turned by third baseman Mariza Rodriquez. The 4-3 win improved the Cougars’ record to 4-1-1 overall.
