Sketches, paintings, jewelry and modern-art pieces done by art students of Gilroy High invite a closer look.

One of Gilroy High School's art teachers, Annie Tobin, held up a sketch by Gilroy student, Diana Rojas. "She didn't realize she had this much talent," Tobin said.

The art on display in Gilroy High's library shows talent on many levels. Delicately crafted jewelry, paintings, sketches and modern art pieces reveal both skill and thoughtfulness on the part of the students.

Showing the work of student Erick Canto, who has created art books that are simple and yet emotional, Tobin said, "This assignment was very conceptual. I didn't give them many parameters, which means the students spent a lot of time thinking about what the project could be."

The results say something about each student. Each art book is uniquely beautiful.

"We are fortunate to have teachers with such skill and dedication," said the school's principal, Dr. Marco Sanchez.

Annie Tobin also commented on the zero period, new this year, which allows students to take art classes. "Period zero (a class that begins before the regular school start time) brings in students who wouldn't otherwise be able to take an art class," Tobin said.

Gilroy High School's devoted fine arts teachers include Bryn Del Mano, Greg Grant, Karen Hockemeyer, Robert Morneau, Lex Steffensen, Annie Tobin, Gayle Vinyard and Phil Robb, department chair and musical director.
